Monday morning I'm debuting my new product Nice Paks.
They are natural no-mess alternatives to ice packs.
Why use those blue goo-filled cold packs or drippy plastic bags filled with ice when you can pop a Nice Pak into the freezer and use it instead!
Nice Paks have cotton flannel pillowcase style covers which are removable and washable. Inside is a muslin bag filled with flaxseed and herbs.

I have a bunch of large cotton dishcloths/washcloths in stock at Crochet Funtime, the 8 by 8 size is great for washing dishes, cleaning up the kitchen...
They're Tunisian stitch, so are twice as dense as regular crochet. These washcloths have durability, scrubbability and are way cuter than that boring old sponge.

I've also stocked several smaller sized about 4x5) versions at my Etsy shop. These are just the same scrubby, durable washcloths, just a bit smaller. The 4x5 size is great for dishes and cleaning but is also the perfect size for showering and for use as a face cloth.

Coming soon: Tiny versions of my washcloth pattern, great for makeup removal, toner application or as my son has found, great for teething babies to chew on!

Trying my hand at dying yarn

I'm a certified fiber-aholic. It's a real problem.
I don't have the money to indulge my desires for fancy soft and squishy hand-dyed wools as much as I'd like. I tend to splurge once every few months and get something really nice and turn it into a cool item.
So when the opportunity to get undyed Peace Fleece (a wool blend) AND acid dyes at the wholesale cost came my way...well, I splurged!
This afternoon I broke out my supplies and dyed that yarn!

Skein One:

Started out plain

These are the dyes I used: Burnt orange, crimson and brown

First I hand painted it (with a turkey baster!) for good coverage

Then I kettle dyed it on the stovetop (in jars to keep the color separate) to deepen the colors.

Skein Two:

Plain again

Then the dyes: Brown and teal

This one just got dyed on the stovetop

And the final results!

What you get:
A Hedgie hand-painted tee and prefold set. Both have been dyed with real coffee for a natural light tan color, and painted using acrylic-based artist paints.

Prefold is Chinese style DSQ (made by Thirsties) and is 100% unbleached cotton. Infant sized, 12x16", 7-15lbs. Tee is 100% cotton, sized 3-9 months (made by Gerber).

We have also included a copy of the children's book, The Happy Hedgehog, by Marcus Pfister.

Nursing Pads

My choice of craft activities has definitely skewed toward things that I can use or need!
After weeks of diapers (which I'm still making) this week I've turned to nursing pads!

I made a BUNCH of crocheted wool nursing pads for sale in my store.

Then in an attempt to de-clutter my craft area I started cutting up my fabric scraps (leftover from diaper making) to make cotton flannel nursing pads for myself.
I could not use the wool ones. I have sensitivities to wool, which I'm sure would not make breastfeeding any easier!

I heard the calls for a longer rise Dillybum and made the Supreme Fit!
The rise is about two inches longer than the Regular Fit, putting it at a 16 inch rise.

Sweater Top Sleep Sack

I made a wool sleep sack for the new baby.
These are great for using as a nighttime soaker because you can change the baby's diaper without having to remove any clothing!
The bottom has a drawstring that can be untied for access to the diaper area. Then the sleep sack is just pulled up over the diaper, a quick change, and baby's back to sleep in no time! That is, if he even wakes up at all!

The sleep sack works like a regular baby soaker also...everywhere it touches diaper, it will absorb. This keeps baby's crib sheets dry.

I made this partially from a pattern and partially freestyle.
The top portion is from a baby sweater pattern, though I freestyled the sleeves and the neck opening and edging.
The bottom is totally freestyled.
I think it came out rather nicely.

Someone said the pooling of the colors looks like waves hitting the beach. I like that.

I've been mostly making little items the last two weeks. Once I finished the shower gifts, I couldn't emotionally take on anything that I couldn't finish in one sitting or one day. But I still felt that I needed to list some items in the store. Sooo....

In addition to making crocheted items, I also dabble in sewing. This is a recent hobby of mine and I'm nowhere near as good as the WAHMs who sell their sewn wares on HyenaCart, but I'm getting good enough to make a go at items for my own kids.
And really, isn't that where it all starts??

Anyway, I've made a bunch of one-size flannel diapers for our new baby, due in May. In the beginning they were VERY basic, two layers of flannel sewn together, turned inside out and topstitched. BASIC.
Then I started sewing in hidden layers of flannel and soaker panels. They seemed more absorbant.
I was also experimenting with outer layers of knit cotton instead of flannels, it added to the cute factor, there are SO many cute knit prints! I also did a few with fleece outers, theoretically, these ones will be waterproof, theoretically.
Then I took a looooong break from diaper making.

Last night and today I made EIGHT diapers!!
All flannel inners and outers with sewn in internal soaker panels. All eight are basically the exact same diaper, just different fabrics.

BOTH of my kids took looooong naps today so I am happy to say that I got to take a nice long shower AND finish up with most of my diaper making!
I made another eight diapers, finishing up the yellow airplanes and monkeys and these six! Geckos and Traffic on light and dark blue. I think they came out great!
